Question 1

What business data should we save from company phones before they are wiped?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

Save anything that exists only on the device, because a proper erase makes the old data unreadable. Check business contacts, photos of documents or job sites, and messages that must be kept for your records. Move authenticator apps used for multi-factor sign-in to a new phone first, or those accounts can be hard to recover. Email and files that sync to company accounts are usually safe already.

Question 2

Who from our company needs to be involved to release devices from management?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

Whoever holds admin access to your management and account consoles, such as Intune, Jamf, Google, Apple Business Manager or Android Zero-touch. Accounts and management profiles are removed with your administrator's access, and we can sit down with that person to clear the settings. If an outside vendor enrolled some devices, such as point-of-sale tablets, the vendor may need to release them, so contact them early.

Question 3

What if a former employee's personal Apple ID or Google account is still on a phone?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

The device stays locked until that account releases it. Activation Lock on an iPhone and Factory Reset Protection on Android ask for the previous account even after a reset, so the former employee needs to sign out or remove the device from their account. For iPhones and iPads your company bought, Apple has its own support request that requires proof of purchase. Until then, nobody else can use the device.

Question 4

Is a list of IMEI numbers needed before the devices are collected?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

No. A rough count of devices and their types is enough to plan, and exact IMEI or serial numbers are recorded at pickup. If you want your own list beforehand, dialing *#06# on most phones shows the IMEI, and tablets show their serial number in Settings under About. Your device management console can usually export the full list, including the employee each device was assigned to.

Question 5

Why not simply drop our old company phones at a carrier store?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

A store take-back is fine for a single handset, but it does not unenroll your devices or give you a per-device record. Retailers that sell cell phones in California must offer to take back used ones. For a company, the missing steps are releasing each device from Apple Business Manager, Zero-touch or your management system, confirming the erase and keeping a record of what left.

Question 6

What happens to a phone or tablet that no longer powers on?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

It cannot be erased and checked like a working device, so it goes to physical destruction instead of resale. The storage inside still holds data even when the screen is dead or the battery has failed. If the battery is swollen, keep that device apart from the others, away from anything flammable, and mention it in advance, since damaged lithium batteries are packed separately.

Question 7

Can VoIP desk phones and rugged barcode scanners be recycled along with phones?

Fryderyk Florczak · Accepted Answer

Yes, they are among the devices covered, along with iPhones, Android phones, iPads, tablets and mobile hotspots. VoIP desk phones store call logs and provisioning details, so they go through the same erase as other devices. Some rugged scanners need a vendor tool to reset, so note the make and model when you send your list. Offices moving from desk phones to softphones often have a batch of these.
