Search for Looker Studio dashboard templates and you will find plenty of polished reports ready to copy. Some are genuinely useful; many look impressive in a screenshot and fall apart once your own data is connected. This guide explains what a template gives you, where it stops, how to bring e-commerce data into a report and when a custom build is worth it. One naming note first: in April 2026 Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio. Existing reports, links and data sources carried over without any action, and since most people still search for Looker Studio, this article uses both names.

Looker Studio dashboard templates: what you actually get

A template is a report layout wired to a sample data source. You make a copy, swap in your own sources, and the charts fill with your data, provided the fields match. That condition is the catch:

  • A Looker Studio dashboard template built for GA4 expects GA4 field names. Templates made for Universal Analytics, which Google shut down in 2024, no longer have a data source to connect to.
  • Templates for Google Ads, Search Console or GA4 usually work well, because every account exposes the same fields.
  • Templates for CRMs, stores or social platforms often rely on a partner connector, a third-party service, often paid, that passes your data to the report. Read its terms and pricing before you authorize it.

For a quick overview of one standard source, a template is hard to beat. The trouble starts when the report has to answer questions that are specific to your business.

Where templates fall short

  • Your definitions. A template shows generic metrics, while your team may define a qualified lead, a repeat customer or gross margin in its own way.
  • Several sources at once. Blending ad spend with store revenue, or leads with CRM outcomes, needs matching keys and date handling that a template cannot know.
  • Data quality. A template will happily chart broken tracking. Duplicate conversions or missing e-commerce events look like real trends.
  • Speed. Reports that query GA4 live can run into API quotas when many people open them; extracted data or a BigQuery export avoids that.

What the best Looker Studio dashboards have in common

The best Looker Studio dashboards are rarely the most colorful. They share a few habits:

  1. Each page answers a small number of questions that someone acts on.
  2. Scorecards for the main figures sit at the top, trends in the middle and detail tables at the bottom.
  3. Date range and filter controls behave the same way on every page.
  4. Every metric has a written definition, and the numbers have been checked against the source system.
  5. Someone owns the report and fixes it when a source changes.

A good ecommerce dashboard, for example, puts revenue, orders, conversion rate and average order value at the top, then revenue by channel and campaign, then product and inventory detail. A good KPI dashboard for management is shorter still: a handful of scorecards with targets and a trend line for each.

How to connect Magento to Looker Studio, and other store platforms

Store data is where templates help least, because every platform keeps orders differently. There are four common routes:

  • Through GA4. If e-commerce tracking is set up properly, GA4 already holds orders, revenue and products. It is the fastest route, but GA4 figures are not accounting figures.
  • Directly from the database. The MySQL connector can read store tables. Use a read-only user limited to a reporting copy or to prepared views, allow connections only from the IP addresses Google publishes for its connectors, and use SSL. Magento's database structure is complex, so views that flatten orders and products save a great deal of effort.
  • Through a scheduled export. A nightly job writes orders to Google Sheets or BigQuery, and the report reads from there, which keeps the store database out of the report's reach.
  • Through a partner connector. Convenient, but it adds a subscription and a third party with access to your sales data.

The same choices apply if you want to connect PrestaShop to Looker Studio or report on a WooCommerce store, since both run on MySQL-compatible databases. One date to note: according to Google's Data Studio release notes, new data sources for MySQL 5.6 or 5.7 cannot be created through the MySQL connector after February 26, 2027, and existing ones may stop loading data properly. Older store servers should plan a database upgrade or switch to the export route.

Template or custom build: a quick decision guide

  • Use a template for a single standard source, internal use and questions the template already answers.
  • Adapt a template when the layout suits you but you need your own metrics, filters or branding.
  • Build custom when several sources must be blended, figures must match your accounting, clients or executives will rely on the report, or store data is involved.

Custom builds are the focus of our business intelligence and Looker Studio dashboards service. Whichever route you choose, reports in what used to be Google Data Studio, and is now Data Studio again, can be shared as view-only links and sent by scheduled email, so the finished dashboard reaches people where they already work.

Frequently asked questions: looker studio dashboard templates

Is Looker Studio now called Data Studio?

Yes. Google announced on April 10, 2026 that Looker Studio returns to its original name, Data Studio, and existing reports and data sources moved over with no action needed. The paid edition is now Data Studio Pro, previously Looker Studio Pro, while Looker remains a separate enterprise BI platform. Details are in Google's announcement.

Is a Looker Studio dashboard template safe to use with client data?

A copied report belongs to you, and the template's author does not see your copy. The risk lies with partner connectors, which pass your data through another company's service. Check who runs the connector and what its terms allow before you authorize it.

What do Looker Studio dashboard services include?

Typically the KPI definitions, connector setup, data cleaning, visual design, sharing and scheduled delivery, and documentation of how each number is calculated, so the report stays trusted after handover.

If you would rather start from your questions than from a template, our Looker Studio dashboard service builds reports around your KPIs, and reliable tracking underneath them comes from GA4 and Google Tag Manager setup.
