How it works
- Send a rough list. Photos of the pile work too: how many computers, monitors and other items there are.
- Agree on the data. We mark which drives get wiped, which get destroyed, and whether you want to keep any of them yourself.
- Pickup. We collect at a time that suits the office, including carrying equipment out of a back room or storage area.
- Wipe or remove storage. Drives are sanitized or pulled and set aside before the rest of the hardware moves on.
- Recycling and records. The hardware goes to a California-approved e-waste recycler and you receive the itemized list and the recycling paperwork.
California e-waste rules in brief
In California most electronic devices become universal waste, a category of hazardous waste regulated by the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), once they are discarded. They may not go into a trash bin, a recycling cart or a dumpster, and they have to go to an authorized collector or recycler. CalRecycle's covered electronic waste program applies to video displays with screens larger than four inches, which includes monitors, laptops and tablets. Batteries, including the lithium-ion packs inside laptops, are also regulated as hazardous waste when thrown away.

Is it illegal to throw away computers and electronics in California?
For most devices, yes. Discarded computers, monitors, laptops, tablets and phones are generally managed as universal waste under DTSC rules, so they cannot go in the trash, a recycling cart or a dumpster. They have to go to an authorized collector or recycler, and loose batteries follow similar rules.
Can my business drop off e-waste at the county collection center?
Usually not. The Los Angeles County household hazardous waste and e-waste centers, such as the EDCO site in Signal Hill and the Gaffey Street S.A.F.E. Center in San Pedro, take waste from residents. Business e-waste is excluded, apart from a separate fee-based program for very small quantity generators that works by appointment.
Do hard drives need to be wiped before recycling?
Yes. A recycler's job is to recover materials, not to protect your files, and deleting files or reformatting a drive leaves the data recoverable. Drives that can be wiped and verified are wiped; drives that are failing or held especially sensitive data are set aside for physical destruction.
Can servers, printers and networking equipment be recycled too?
Yes. Servers, storage units, switches, firewalls, printers and UPS units can all be collected. Routers and firewalls should be reset first because they often store VPN keys and admin passwords, and UPS batteries are packed separately from the electronics.
What does computer recycling cost?
It depends on the mix. Recent equipment with resale value can offset the cost, while items such as old CRT monitors, damaged batteries or a single-item pickup cost more to handle. We quote from your list before anything is collected.
